Long ago, in a place full of magical secrets, lived a bear called Benny. Everybody liked Benny because he was bright and enthusiastic, which made every day feel like a party. Even when the sun set and night crept in, Benny was still playing quietly or gathering berries and nuts with his friends. Life in the woods was peaceful, and everyone loved talking and sharing stories with one another.
One day, as Benny was wandering near an ancient oak tree, he came across a shiny object sticking out of the ground. With a little digging, he pulled it free. It was an old, rusty key! Benny’s imagination sparked like fireworks, and he hurried to show his friends. They all pondered its mystery, but then a wise old turtle named Tilly spoke, “Keys unlock treasures. You should search for what it opens!”
The thought of treasure excited Benny, “Maybe there’s treasure hidden in the woods, and we can find it together!” Everyone agreed that it would be a unique adventure. So, they searched and searched until they found a locked box. But what will they find inside? They all tried the key, but it didn’t work. Feeling disappointed, they looked closer at the box. On one side of it was a detailed picture of a large oak tree and a stone fountain. On the top of the box was an old letter, but it was too faded to read.
Feeling curious, Benny and his friends decided to follow the drawing. They hurried through the woods to the big oak tree. When they got there, they recognized the stone fountain in the picture. But there was nothing to dig up!
Then Timmy Chipmunk had an idea. He said, “We can ask the wise old owl if there’s something we’re missing.” Benny thought it was an excellent plan, so they all scampered up to Wise Old Owl’s tree. They explained everything to him, hoping he could help.
“Ah, the old treasure map,” Wise Old Owl said softly. “Time and weather have changed it, and perhaps the treasure has disappeared too. But if you all stay together and don’t give up, you might still find what you seek.”
After thanking Wise Old Owl for his advice, the friends returned to the fountain. “What if the treasure is lost to time and just a memory now?” Tilly questioned. But that made them think instead! What if the best treasure was the fun they were having? But then again, it would still be nice to find something shiny…
Suddenly, the bluebird chirped, “What’s this?” and hopped on a plank near the fountain. They hadn’t noticed it before! It was an old box-like piece of wood with an X painted on top. Excitedly, Benny, the biggest bear, lifted it out of the fountain. It was a small chest! All gathered around. Benny lifted the lid, and inside, they found:
Shiny Gold Coins - Perfectly stacked, each catching the sunlight!
Jewels of Every Color - Some so big and bright they could almost be called stars!
Pretty Gifts - There were slippers that sparkled and capes that shimmered in every color imaginable.
They all stared wide-eyed. “Next birthday or party we have, we can wear these!” chirped Timmy.
However, Benny noticed the space in front of the gifts was blank and dusty. “There should be a note or something,” he said.
But there was nothing inside, not even a piece of paper, just lots and lots of jewels and coins! Most friends started taking coins or toys to carry.
“We shouldn’t take too much,” Benny said once more. “There’s enough for everyone to come and have some if we keep the treasure here!” But Benny alone left the gems untouched.
They agreed with Benny, and they spent half the day near the fountain as if it was a sunny picnic day, laughing and grocery chatting while pretending to wear the empty gifts boxes on their heads. Then they made a turn and helped carry the treasure home. Benny and his friends worked together, painstakingly loading all the gems on the deer that had pulled Timmy’s traveling cart. So happy, Benny wondered what fun things they would do with the old treasure.
Then, there was a heavy-looking light blue glitter box in the wagon. No one had touched it nor asked what was inside! So Benny gently opened it. Everybody gasped! There were whole treasure maps, as good as new, showing every single corner of the woods. Maps that showed where to find every treasure there could ever be! Now they had an adventure ahead of them every day of the month!
Many weeks later, Benny was sitting under his cherry blossom tree, staring into the sky, feeling the warm sun on his face. It was a relaxed afternoon, and most hardly wanted to move. Everyone started laughing when Timmy said, “What a wonderful treasure Benny is! Look at all the fun he’s invented for all!” And Benny thought how right Timmy was.
They all agreed that the old treasure chest wasn’t just a bunch of pretty things or stuffed gifts but a key that opened a mighty new way for them all to grow closer to each other and have many laughter-filled afternoons to come.
“You see,” Tilly the turtle taught Benny with wise old eyes, “a real treasure is never just about the gold and jewels. It’s about the memories we create and the friends who hop on over to share with us!”
And so, in the woods of old, the legend of Benny the Bear and his treasure lived on. A treasure hunt, every day, after that forever shared countless days of joy and friendship.
