The Wise Crab and the Fisherman

An evening came to the shore of a great sea, and the waves were rolling in. A fisherman was standing on the beach throwing his net into the water. At last he drew it towards him and caught a crab.

Now the crab had just come out from its home, and instead of going backwards down the beach, as crabs usually do, it had come forward and was casting from it, so that it could easily be put back into the net.

“Why do you do this?” said the fisherman. “You should come backwards into the net, for you can easily go back into your hole. Now it will be impossible for you to get out of it again.”

“My friend,” said the crab:

“Do not reproach a thing until you know it; we should study the acts and customs of all our fellow creatures before we condemn them.”

Take time to know.
