Late one spooky night, Momo the Monster found himself all alone in Monster Town. All the other monsters had run away because they were so afraid of him.
“If only they knew how friendly I am,” said Momo to himself with a deep sigh. “No one will ever play with me.”
Just then a strange little creature came flying by, and, seeing how unhappy Momo looked, it asked,
“What is the matter, dear friend?”
Then for the first time in his life, Momo told all his troubles to this little creature.
“My name is Nia,” said the stranger. “I am a witch, the only friend you have here. What would you like to do?”
“I would like to play with the other monsters here,” said Momo.
“Then I will give you some magic words to say when you want to be friendly with anyone. They are:
Kindness is a treasure
That I like to share,
And if you only give some,
You will surely get your share.
Say these words so that the other monsters can hear. Tell them that it is what you say when you wish to be loved. Surely they will come to you, for monsters know how to appreciate a good thing.” So saying, away flew Nia.
Momo stood under a tree and called out to the monsters to come. But none of them came, so he said the magic words aloud. They had not been lost on the night air long before monsters began to come from everywhere. They crowded around Momo and looked towards him expectantly.
“Kindness is a treasure
That I like to share,
And if you only give some,
You will surely get your share.”
At once all the bad feeling of the other monsters vanished, and they became Momo’s friends.
“Where did you get those magic words? What do they mean?” they asked.
“The words and their meaning were both taught me by my friend, the witch Nia,” answered Momo, and he repeated again the words of the witch.
Then they all went to visit the different monster houses and told the words to magpie, pigeon, toad, and all the other animals living there. They gave to them such presents and made them feel so happy that everything in Monster Town soon became bright and gay.
The kindness of sharing treasures with others is truly worthy to be treasured in a friend’s heart, and every child knows that.
