The Brave Little Ants
One sunny afternoon, deep in the dirt of an ant hill, little Annie the ant had a great idea. “Let’s go on an adventure,” she said to her five closest friends under the gentle rays of the sun.
“But what about our work?” asked Timmy, another little ant. “We have to collect food for winter!”
“We won’t take long,” Annie insisted, her little antennae twitching with excitement. “We’ll just explore a little outside, and then we promise to return.”
After much discussion, the other five agreed. Off they went, tumbling out of the entrance and scampering across the grass blades. Annie said, “Let’s go a bit further than we’ve ever gone before.” And so they did.
As they ventured away from the comfy tunnels of their home, they found a patch of clover where bright flowers were fluttering. Suddenly, disaster struck! A heavy raindrop splashed down on their heads, and they ran for shelter under a wide leaf.
“This storm will never stop!” cried one ant.
Hours passed, and when the ants finally peeked out, they noticed the world had changed. They were separated from their hill by a huge muddy lake!
“We can’t swim,” moaned Timmy.
Just then, Annie shouted, “Look over there!” She pointed to a tiny piece of wood floating by. “If we could get enough ants onto that chunk of bark, it could be our boat!”
“But it’s too far away!”, cried another ant.
Annie thought for a moment. “What if we all link our legs in a long line and crawl down the muddy bank? If we work together, we can reach the piece of wood!”
The ants thought it was a crazy idea, but they had no other solution, so they did just that. One by one, they carefully crawled down the muddy side of the hill. As the last ant reached the wood, the piece began to float away!
Annie squealed, “Quick, hold on tightly with your legs!” Then the bark bobbed along till it gently bumped against the staircase of the entrance. Annie saw dozens of little heads poking out, watching in astonishment.
“What’s happened?” asked the other ants.
“Our adventure didn’t go as planned!” said Annie. “But we all got back safe because we worked together!”
The leader of the other ants stepped forward. “Well done! You show that together, many tiny ants can do very big things!”
From that day on, whenever a worker ant met a problem too big for one to solve, he would call for help, for ants know that all pull together make the little ant hill a fine, strong home.
